Case study · Manufacturing

A bespoke tangential taping machine, engineered end-to-end.

Purpose-built cable-wrapping machine — designed, fabricated, wired, PLC-programmed and commissioned by Lutrom Engineering.

The brief

A repeatable, adjustable tangential taping operation for cable assemblies — variable pitch, controlled tension, and a HMI simple enough for a shift-change hand-over. The unit had to fit an existing footprint and integrate with upstream and downstream conveyance.

Mechanical design & build

In-house design of the drive frame, taping head and guide roller assembly. Aluminium drive wheels for weight and inertia; laser-cut and machined mounting plates for repeatability. Fabrication and assembly at our Northwich workshop.

Electrical & controls

Custom control panel built to BS EN 61439 with a Siemens PLC, VFD-controlled main drive and independent tape-tension servo. Full HMI with recipe management so the operator can call up product-specific pitch and tension profiles.

Commissioning & FAT

Factory Acceptance Test at Lutrom before delivery — full functional run, safety-circuit verification, and hand-over documentation including electrical schematics, operator instructions and PLC program back-up.
